The biggest entirely Swiss ski resort, the 4 Vallées area is renowned for its ski slopes, which stretch over 400 km and are clad in white from November to the end of April. However, winter isn’t the only season where this region stands out. During the summer, it offers hundreds of kilometres’ worth of paths and itineraries, which you can discover by foot or on a mountain bike. There’s something for everyone here: you can visit the Japanese garden in Siviez, which is perfect for families, admire beautiful sunsets at the top of the Pierre Avoi or, if you’re a sporty person, you can try the Tour du Mont-Fort, which can be done by foot or on a bicycle. If you’re a thrill-seeker, why not try the new Gentianes via ferrata? There are two itineraries, an easy and a difficult one. Both will lead you to the top of the Monts de Cion, where you can take in the breathtaking view over the surrounding summits. If you want to take your adventure one step further, you could try mountaineering, as well. A guide will take you to the top of Mont-Fort, along a via cordata, which is a mixture of walking and climbing.
Tempted by hitting the slopes... on an off-road scooter? This activity is available in all of the 4 Vallées ski resorts. You’ll have a whale of a time! If you’re a nature lover or just want to unwind, a stroll along a bisse or a panoramic walk is the perfect way to relax and restore your inner peace. Bear in mind that there’s a yoga path near Veysonnaz which combines walking and yoga.
Whatever you’re after, there’s one thing you can’t miss: the Mont-Fort summit, at 3330 m. The view from there is spectacular in all directions and you can admire the most striking summits of the Alps: the Matterhorn, the Dent Blanche, the Dent d’Hérens, the Mont-Blanc and the Dents du Midi. If you want your experience to be even more magical, you can go up there on Thursdays (from 11 July to 22 August) or on Saturdays (20 July, 3 August and 17 August) to watch the sun rise. You’ll see all the surrounding summits light up – a beautiful sight that’s definitely worth seeing once in your life! But the sunrise isn’t the only thing you can enjoy up there. You can also do a bit of yoga or tuck into a hearty breakfast.
While you are out and about, don’t forget to stop in some of the restaurants you come across, such as the Alpage de Thyon, where you can have brunch during the summer. If you’d rather spend some time in a peaceful place, surrounded by thousand-year-old larches, the Cabane de Balavaux, above Prarion (Nendaz), is the place to head for. You could also enjoy a delicious fondue – the highest fondue in Europe – at the Igloo du Mont-Fort.
